There is something to be said about being inspired to start a business because someone tells you to simply “do it yourself.” Taking this advice, Sidney Louise, Mom-trepreneur, decided to try her hand at making floral hair accessories for herself. What she would learn is that not only was she good at it but she would be inspired to start her own business, Bloomin’ Headz.
As a wife and a mother of three, one teenager and two small twin boys, Sidney has to think on her toes at all times. She has to find the creativity in moments that could be defined by the mundane. She has taken this philosophy of living and allowed it to bloom into something wonderful all the while thinking about ways to inspire the uninspired.
How did the concept of Bloomin’ Headz come about?
I am always looking for something to keep me busy and I was searching for a way to express myself creatively. I had suggested this venture to a friend, who turned it back on me. I was forced to find my inner creative person and allow her to come alive via flowers. As a person who is not one with nature, due to allergies, I have always loved silk flowers and wanted to be able to take them with me, wherever I am.
What inspires your creations?
People, colors, music and my mood inspire me.
As woman with a multifaceted life how do you find balance?
At this time in my life, I have been blessed to be off work to be home with my children. I use my days to complete a degree in Psychology, and make bloomz, in addition to volunteering at my children’s schools. It is not always an easy balance, as my children are at two very different stages in their lives, but I have an amazing support system with my husband and parents, so they make it easy to find the balance.
What advice would you give a 16 year old, a 20 year old and a 30 year old?
At all three stages I would say to follow your dream. When we are young, we dream of being amazing people when we are older, and while being a superhero isn’t possible, being a lawyer, nurse, astronaut, etc. is. Don’t ever lose the child inside of you or their dreams. Find a way to make them happen. And remember to try harder. Don’t let fear rule you.
When asked to think forward about her life and where she sees herself in the future Sidney has this to offer.
The way I choose to live my life each day could be a testament to women everywhere who are working to find the balance between their careers, families and their sanity. I guess the main thing I would like for you to take away from this other than the sheer inclination to buy bloomz, is to get out of your way. When my sister-friend sent this back to me, I was in awe of the person she wrote about, totally forgetting it was me. I don’t see the me that she sees, but I should. We all should. As women, we need to learn to accept the greatness we are and have. If you ask the people around you to describe you, and you don’t recognize the person, you need to clean your life mirror. Don’t let fear rule you. Love you more than anyone else can. And above all else…..
